7 Tips for Safely Storing Valuables In Your Home

Many people struggle with keeping their personal items safe while they’re on vacation. And, believe it or not, there are just as many people out there who are uncomfortable hiding valuables in their home. Although this may seem like a tricky proposition for some, the truth is, it doesn’t have to be challenging. The following tips can help:

1. Keep Items Out of View

This may seem obvious, but if you want to protect your valuables, it’s a bad idea to leave items in the open. For example, the best way to attract unwanted attention to your new stereo is to place it in front of the window for all to see. Likewise, you should avoid decorating your doorway with holiday gifts that will tempt neighborhood troublemakers. If you must keep valuables in front of a doorway or window, cover it with a sheet.

2. Think like a Thief

Thinking like a thief is an excellent way to protect your jewelry and money. You may think that a person would not think to look in a certain place, but differing viewpoints make a significant difference. Look around your home and think about where a thief may check.

3. Think of Unconventional Hiding Spots

It may seem silly, but some people actually hide their valuables in vents. If you broke into the house, would you think to look in a vent on the floor or wall? Ensure that you clean the vent before you place fragile items inside.

4. Hide Items In Plain Sight

If you have an empty soup can sitting on your kitchen counter, clean it out and place your items inside. If you have a paper towel roll that begs for attention, stick something in it and place it in a closet. Get creative with your options and make something difficult to find.

5. Invest in An Alarm System

A home security system is a great way to keep your valuables safe. There are many home security companies in any given community, and you do not have to look far to find one that suits you and your family.

6. Ask a Neighbor or Friend for Help

Some people keep their home valuables safe by asking for help from neighbors and friends. If you anticipate a long vacation in your future, ask somebody to watch your house. A friend may pick up your mail or watch your animals; this conveys the illusion that you are home.

7. Keep a Treasure Map

Remember to keep track of your various methods of keeping your valuables safe. If you choose to hide your items in unusual places, keep a list. However, keep the list away from prying eyes. If you worry that you may lose the list, create a second copy.

While most people know how to keep their wallet or glasses safe on a business trip, they may not know what to do to keep, say, their collection of rare figurines safe. The good news is, when it comes to keeping your valuables away from shady strangers or questionable neighbors, there are many options on the table. Hopefully, these tips should help you come up with even more ideas for securing your valuables.
